81% of Women Report Experiencing Sexual Harassment

The #MeTo movement put a spotlight on sexual harassment in women’s lives, and supporting research has documented just how pervasive the problem is.

  • A Stop Street Harassment survey showed that 81% of women had experienced some form of sexual harassment in their lives.

  • RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network) reports that 1 in 6 American women have been a victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime.

  • The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reports that women, ages 18-24 who are enrolled in college, are 3X more likely to be victims of sexual assault than any other group of women.

With data like this, it’s safe to assume that the majority of women you interact with on a daily basis have had to deal with an uncomfortable, mentally distressing, or possibly even a life-threatening violent assault at some point in their lives.

Empowerment self-defense training doesn’t just prepare women to handle future dangerous scenarios, but it can also build confidence and help heal women who have experienced violence in their past.

Workplace Harassment

For many women, their jobs put them in environments where harassment and violence can occur. Hospitality, food and beverage, healthcare, and retail are all industries with above average incidents of sexual harassment and workplace violence.

Working with the public puts women at increased risk. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reports that the top two industries for sexual harassment charges are 1. accommodation and food services and 2. retail trade. Combined, they account for around 25% of all sexual harassment reports.

Furthermore, violence in the healthcare industry is increasing with 44% of nurses reporting an incident of physical violence and 68% reporting verbal abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic according to a research study from the University of Virginia.
